Where champions are made
We just had our workout at Wrigley Field. It was cloudy and cool and the place was empty and I can imagine what it’s going to be like tomorrow when the playoffs start. We flew into Chicago yesterday and I had a four-hour flight to think about what this team has done and what we’ve gone through to get to this point. You could just sense from the way the guys were acting on the plane that this wasn’t just another trip.
Last night I had a steak at Hugo’s on State Street with some friends and when I got back to the hotel the Twins were just rolling in for their playoff game with the White Sox and I ran into a couple of their players that I know, Nick Punto and Delmon Young. I got up to my room and around midnight I got a text from Dustin Pedroia. We went to Arizona State together. He had just gotten to Anaheim for Boston’s series there. He sends me a message, ‘This is where champions are made — Let’s go.’ Dustin’s always got corny sayings, but they’re at the right time. He put this in perspective when he used the word, champion. That’s what this is all about. We’re one of eight teams left and one of us will be champion.
Today I walked the Michigan Avenue Magnificent Mile, picked up some gifts for myself and my family and enjoyed a really nice Chicago day, without the tension and anxiety of a game day. Just took a breather. Tomorrow I’ll just try to go through my normal routine, a little breakfast, lunch before going to the park, then gear up for the atmosphere and excitement. I’m sure it will be building as the day goes on.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on what has happened since you arrived in Chicago. I wish you and the rest of this beloved Dodger team the best of wishes as you start this journey into post season play. We just got a glimpse of the lineup, and I know I have said this numerous times, but it’s worth repeating. We are just so very proud of you, and what you have accomplished this season, both on and off the field. I have a classroom full of first graders that ask how you did every day, and they are cheering for you and the rest of the Dodgers all the way into the World Series, if it’s meant to be. You are a class act, Andre Ethier, and you are setting a wonderful example of how athletes are supposed to play their game. Once again, I wish you and the rest of the Dodgers the best, and remember to have fun!!!

I had purchased postseason tickets prior to the winning streak, knowing in my heart that we would prevail. Ha ha, I’m like your friend Dustin with my sayings. I have been fortunate to have been at most of the home games and have suffered and celebrated with you guys. But I was positive all along. I was so happy when the Dodgers acquired Mr. Torre, Manny and Casey. And you have become quite the star. However you still have both feet on the ground and are still wonderful to the Dodger fans. There are a group of us who have been your fans forever and have supported you even when you sat on the bench. You were the consummate professional waiting for your turn. Your day Chicago sounds a lot like mine. I flew in Tuesday morning and walked all day. I went and got a steak at Gibson’s though. I was very lucky to go to the last home game thursday and the rally on sunday!! man i stayed SO late on thursday and had a such a great time! it was so awesome to see you guys celebrating and having such a good time with the biggest smiles on your faces!!
