Pizzeria Mozza

There comes a time when you can try a version of a food for the thousandth time and still cannot decide if this is actually the way you like it the most. When you try this new take on it, it seems like you can always compare it or find somewhere where it was just as good. For me, I am always in search of the best version of the foods I love and when I find it, I become addicted and find myself coming back again and again to see if it holds up to the first time and leaves me with that same “wow” feeling.

To me, pizza is one of those foods that can be tweaked and contorted too many ways and be messed up on appearance and taste. A good slice of pizza starts with its looks. If it is a jumbled slice that does not have evenly spread toppings and cheese with grease pooling in certain spots, than the rendezvous ends abruptly. Also, I am a thin-crust guy (I know, I know, but the argument ends there with me. There will be no discussions or persuading me on this. I just don’t see the point to overwhelm a slice with all that bread). Anyway, carbs are out people! Get with it…thin’s in. The battle on this topic will rage on, but I won’t hear it!

When I first arrived in LA and began my restaraunt search, I heard hoots and hollerings about this certain pizza joint that serves up a great slice. Well, not just great but “the best in LA.” I knew I had to try this just because of the claim alone. I began to collect my info on this place and soon found out that it was one of the tougher reservations to get for lunch or dinner. This only led me to believe that this might be one of those “in” places where celebrities and so-called celebs have shown up and caused this reputation. Not the food though…at least that’s what I thought.

I had carefully planned out my method for getting a seat at this place (hint: I showed up between lunch and dinner…I am sneaky, I know, but you guys can have that tid bit. Just don’t everyone use it all at once or we we’ll create the same problem as lunch and dinner).

As I pulled up to the corner of Melrose and Highland (around 3 o’clock), I was pleased to see no line outside, so I decided to go for it and pulled up to the valet. He asked if I was here for Pizzeria Mozza and of course, I said that I was. I walked in and was pleased to see many open spots and was given a choice between a table or sitting at one of two bars. I chose the bar that surrounded the kitchen, as I wanted to see this operation up close. I was presented a menu and began my inspection of the place.

exterior.jpg

The menu has 15 or so pizzas ranging from squash blossom tomato sauce and burrata cheese (below) to the typical meatlovers of sausage, salami and prosciutto. I picked the one most resembling my favorite – the Fresno chili, salumi salami and mozzarella.

squash blossom and buratta.jpg

This isn’t your typical pizzeria…the apps are to die for and don’t disappoint.

But first up was the fried squash blossom stuffed with ricotta…one word – UNBELIEVABLE! This is one of those addicting foods that is a favorite of mine now. I will have to avoid this place in the offseason because of this dish alone!

Next up was Mussel al forno with Calabrian sauce and if you’re a mussel lover like me, then come for these. They rank up there in my top two spots to get mussels — the other being Tomaso’s in Phoenix but that’s another review.

mussels.jpg

Now to the pizza. It comes out of that oven piping hot and picture perfect. I could still hear the sizziling as it sat in front of me – that oh so good popping and crackling that teases you to try a bite. But, an experienced diner knows this will only ruin your meal because your taste buds and tongue will burn and make it a bittersweet meal.

fresno chile and salami.jpg

So I finally sank my teeth in and I began to analyze — it’s really good. Bite after bite, I experienced and discovered a new taste. The expectations that I had built up had gotten me wary but at the end of devouring the entire pizza, I was impressed by every bite, especially the crust which is very crunchy on the outside but chewy on the inside.

Well, if you can’t tell, I have really grown to love this place…like they say, love at first bite! It is not only a great pizza they serve up, but I have tried almost every appetizer and they are all great. It is definitely a must-visit when looking at your dining options in LA, so take my advice on this one and give it a try. Who knows, you might see me there…that’s how often I eat there now!

Andre, your amazing! As a ballplayer & as a person 🙂

Congrats to you and your wifey on the soon to be new baby!!

  2. ethier16

What a great review! Not that your others haven’t been awesome, but I think this is your best by far :). I really enjoy reading your entries. All I can say is, like those hits, keep ’em coming! You were so close to hitting for the cycle today :(, but its cool all your hits were fresh.

Ps. Congrats on soon-to-be Lil ‘Dre Day! 😀
Pps. You, Manny, & Kemp are what I like to call “Los 3 Deliquentes” haha. ;]

    Andre~
First and foremost -you are right, thin crust is the best!! I don’t know what else to say other than you are absolutely incredible!! Your reviews are fabulous!!! I just wish I lived in So-Cal so I can go to some of these places. I love mussells, and shellfish in general, so this would definitely be to my liking, not to mention the pizza. I also have to say, your humor is coming through very nicely to the point where it is laugh out loud funny at times ~ this review inparticular when you were trying to convince your audience how thin crust is best. Anyhow, terrific write up once again.
    .
I wish you the best of luck in the upcoming weeks against your opponents. I don’t have to tell you how great you are playing right now, but in case you aren’t paying attention, between your performance in Arizona and your performance during these two games (not to mention your whole month of August really), you are becoming a household name around the major leagues right now. I know you probably don’t care too much about individual stats, but your fans do. We want bragging rights that you play for the Dodgers when your name comes up in conversation about what’s happening in the major leagues. You have definitely got a classroom full of first graders intrigued. By the way, since we had been working on Phoenix, Arizona and Chase Field, I showed them your homerun into the pool – you got a lot of screaming and clapping – very cool. One student even mentioned it was like hitting a homerun into the splash zone at AT&T park – I would have to agree with him,and I am sure it was a lot less stressful then being amongst those rotten Giants fans.
    .
Also, you are to be commended for all the wonderful things you are doing outside of the ball park as well. You are a wonderful person, Andre, and that’s something that all people can look up to, baseball fans or not. Have a fabulous couple of weeks, keep getting those hits (and stealing bases – Wow!! ), and best wishes to you and your wife on the upcoming arrival of your new baby.

Hi Andre, great pizza review. I tend to like pan crust at most chain pizza places, but nothing beats New York style thin crust for me. And that fried squash stuffed with ricotta sounds excellent. I’m definitely in the mood to try some gourmet pizzas now.

Congratulations on your offensive explosion tonight, and best wishes to you and your wife.

I’m so glad I was finally able to post on your wonderful site. The group on Inside the Dodgers gave me instructions. I will definitely try this place the next time I’m in the area. I too am a thin crust person. I will look forward to your future reviews and continue having a great season with the Dodgers……….hoping to see you in the playoffs!

  9. amyw27

    Andre-
Thank you for posting another great entry for us Dodger fans to read, and also for going Italian :). Italian is by far my favorite style of food. I will just have to go check this place out!
    .
At the stadium last night, they showed your great contribution of lending your time at the Shelter. You are such a great guy and it makes me happy to see how much you care about the community in which you play. We are all proud of you.
    .
Keep up the great work on the field too. Your performance only gets better and maybe one of these days you will complete the cycle 😉 I know you can do it.
    .
Have a wonderful September. I will come out and watch as many home games as I possibly can.

    Go Dodgers! Go Blue!

Have you been to Osteria Mozza? Its right next door and one of Mario Batali’s restaurants also…. It is absolutely unbelievable, I had no idea that food could taste that good!!

I always enjoy your reviews, there are so many amazing places to eat in LA…looking forward to the next one!!

  11. heartruss

Andre…great review!! I want to go there now. That dish with the mussels looked absolutely awesome. You should be a food critic during the off season. You certainly have the knack of writing. I too would like to wish you congratulations on the impending birth of your son. You will certainly find great joy in him. Children are such a blessing. Spend as much time with him as you can, because they grow up so fast! As you know, you have many many fans. I think that you are probably the most popular player on the team from what many fans have said. I think it’s because of your patience, your humanitarian efforts and last but not least, your baseball skills. We love you Andre. Go Dodgers.

  12. ilovela

I’m sure you coulda gotten a seat if you went in with your uniform on. Anyways, that place is awesome, and thanks for hittin .314, with 24 runs, 8 jacks and 14 rbis this past month. Oh, the 3 sb’s didn’t hurt either. You got me into the fantasy league playoffs. Keep up the good work!

  13. fawnkyjunk

    Hey Andre,
Great review. I have passed by this place a billion times but never eaten there. I’ll have to try it out.

But i also want to clue you into other good restaurants in LA. First let me start by saying that while i like going to really nice formal restaurants, what i really like is finding those hole-in-the-wall joints were the food is good. Here are 2 of them:

Mario’s Peruvian (corner of Melrose and Rossmore)
This place doesn’t look like much from the outside or the inside but the food is legit! It’s almost always packed and its hard to find parking but the food is worth it. I personally like a dish called “Lomo Saltado”. Best Peruvian food in LA.

El Taurino (just a block south of Olympic and Hoover)
Everybody has their favorite taco place. This one is mine. The Carne Asada tacos at this place are the best. There is always a wait in line. But its worth the wait. Probably 10 to 15 minutes away from the stadium. Bring some into the clubhouse.

    Hope you like these joints.

    So don’t let the look

  14. acardona16

    Andre,
I am so happy you picked a pizza place for your review! pizza is one of those foods that I can eat ANY time of the day! (although I do have to say I like thick crust better! haha) I really want to check this place out!! it sounds great!! Also you are doing an ETHIERIFFIC job on (and off) the field!! i was rooting for you to get the full cycle last night! but even though you didn’t you were still amazing (as always!). I am taking a “restaurant operations” class in college because its always been a dream of mine to open a restaurant! well one of our assignments was to write in detail the concept of our restaurant and my restaurant is going to be ALL about the Dodgers!! everyone loved my idea (accept for this girl who is an angels fan.. lol) I have so many ideas for my restaurant!! maybe sometime (way in the future! haha) you can come visit my restaurant!! haha!! well good luck with the rest of the season!! your doing an amazing job!! I’ll be at the game saturday cheering for you!! haha and CONGRATULATIONS and best of wishes to you and your wife on your upcoming arrival of your baby!!

mmmmmm the food sounds so yummy! I would definitely like to try this place!! Andre, you do such a good job of describing your experience! You are doing awesome in every game!!! You truly are talented, and I’m glad it is being noticed. I can’t wait to watch you play live soon!! I hope you guys extend the season, otherwise I’ll miss watching!! Congrats on soon welcoming a little Andre!!!

    Hey Andre.
Great review. It made me hungry. Nice to see you taking the time to let us fans know what you lke and where to go here in LA. Really this pizza review was the best so far, I love the way you express your enjoyment of the taste and the pictures you put up.

Keep up the great work both on and off the field! and CONGRTAS to you and our wife on our soon to be lil one!!

    ~Monique

Hi Andre…..this is my first time reading one of your blogs and I thought it was absolutely awesome! I think it’s great that you take the time to try and interact with your fans, on a different level other than on the field. I wanted to ask you about these places that you review as far as pricing goes, cause they look like they would be pretty expensive. I was also going to suggest to you that you try Lamppost Pizza in El Monte, CA on Peck Rd. I work there part-time and I have been going there my whole life more or less. I love the pizza there you can choose from Old Style(double cooked crust) or thin crust, we don’t have those fancy looking pizzas but the pizza their is great and so is the atmosphere. I hope that you can maybe drop by sometime it would be pleasure to meet you…….oh and could you bring Russell Martin too….. just cause he seems like good company. WINK* WINK* I’m going to the game tonight to cheer you guys on with your winning streak, I really hope you guys make the play-offs this year. GOODLUCK!

  18. thinkingblue

    Andre,
Another great blog…first let me just congratulate you on how great you’ve been playing. Thanks encouraging all the Dodgers fan out there. Second, congratulations on fatherhood…yes it has begun. You are officially a dad even if the baby is not here yet, but your mind starts working like a daddy. Best wishes for you and your wife. And last, but not least…PIZZA TIME…great blog. I have to go try that restaurant out. Pizza taste better when it first comes out of the oven…freshly made. MmmmmMmmm! But I like my crust in between. Not thick, cause yes I agree with you…why so much bread….but I personally don’t like it too thin. For some reason, to me, Pizza taste saltier with a thin crust. I’ve tried the Carne Asada pizza from a different chain pizza restaurant from California and it taste just like a Carne Asada torta. So if you like tortas & pizza, why not. Well Andre, good luck on tonights game.

Wow. Now you are making me jealous because I live in New York. I LOVE pizza so if I happen to be in LA I will definitely try to get to this place.

Congrats to you and your wife and soon to be little Ethier!
    Let’s Go Dodgers!… and Mets! (I know, I am a confused person!)

  20. ksethier@gmail.com

    My mouth is watering!
I’ve been looking for a way to contact you. We share the same last name. I keep a ‘Google alert’ on Ethier so that I can check out what other people who might be related to me somewhere down the line are doing and where they are. Of course, most of the 10 or so alerts every day are alerts relating to you. My family comes from Quebec, obviously, as I believe most Ethiers do. My father was born in New Hampshire but his father moved to the Detroit area for work. I wonder how far we have to go back to find a link.
My husband built a brick oven in our back yard here in a Detroit (go Tigers!) suburb and it is THE BEST pizza around. You can see pictures of it here on my blog: http://lustingwanderluster.blogspot.com/search/label/brick%20oven
When you’re in town getting pounded by the Tigers, contact me and come sample the pizza. We can talk family trees. Pudge used to live in my neighborhood but he’s been traded. 😦
Good luck with the rest of the season. And with your little one on the way.

  21. antiqfam@verizon.net

Buddy, Forgive me, it’s just the rebel in me……Thick is better! When I’m off the ALL Protien thing, I’ll try the restaurant. ;o)

  22. cpompe1

Another great review Andre! I love pizza! And I know you like thin crust, but I can eat all kinds! 🙂 But this place sounds great!

I know I don’t have to tell you, but you’re doing a terrific job on (and off) the field. I love your baseball play but I love the fact that it comes so naturally to give back to those less fortunate. Saw that KCAL9 piece on you and the Weingart Center (is that how you spell it?) Anyways, the best of luck to you, Maggie, and your little one (when he arrives)!!! 🙂

  23. fightguy2000@yahoo.com

    Hi Dre’!

I just stumbled onto your blog and I LOVE it! I will definitely keep reading! And, yes, this is the BEST!

Congrats on the baby and your success on the field (and your involvement in the community). I remember watching you play in your very first game at Dodger Stadium and saying thinking that you were gonna be the future of the Dodger outfield! I am glad I was right! You and Russell are my boys!

Have you tried some of the classic LA dining joints like The Pantry, Phillipes and The Pacific Dining Car? Check them out when you have some time.

Good luck with the rest of the season! Go Dodgers!

hey andre! great review! here’s another great pizza place for you to try:

    http://www.rocketpizzalounge.com/

it’s SO yummy.. i think you’d love the crust.. it’s crispy, yet soft on the inside.. so so good.. and the place is just downtown.. close to the stadium..

on a baseball note.. you’ve been amazing lately.. keep doing what you do.. playoffs here we come! 🙂

  28. paul_robin@yahoo.com

    Andre’,
Love the reviews. Nice to see a ballplayer who doesn’t take himself too seriously. Next time I am out in L.A. on one of my Dodger getaways I will have to try some of your spots. Too bad the Dodgers no longer train in Vero. Rips, The Place for Ribs, Monte’s and Ay! Jalisco! are great places in Vero.

Good luck on the final stretch run!!!

Holy cow! I used to call you the “triple threat,” but now that I see you can write, you’re a foodie, and you have a sense of humor, I guess you’re a “sextuple threat!” We have the writing and culinary curiosity in common, and I’m a fellow southpaw as well…oh yeah, and I love me my baseball! (but being “just a girl,” I never got to really play, so I now live it vicariously through my son- no soccer mom here!!)

I’m loving this blog idea…really gives us a “taste” (forgive me) of the man behind the bat. In future could you make mention as to whether there are vegetarian options for us non-carnivores? (ok, we don’t have that in common)
I’ll be sure to check in periodically for your advice.
As for restaurants, I worked in and around LA and BH for quite a few years, and I’ve only found a few Italian places that have been acceptable. I’m 1/2 Italian, though, so I may be a bit jaded.
Honestly, I have to say that my own stuffed squash blossoms are unbeatable. They’re not fried, so they’re also quite healthful. But speaking of fried, have you ever had arancini? They’re the little risotto balls with melted mozzarella inside that comes out in a long string when you take a bite. Mmm. They’re insane, but absolutely decadent, so I only make them about twice a year. Hard to find out there, like good gnocchi. Maybe I should open a place? lol (I’d be glad to cook for you and yours anytime- I always make plenty, I’m Italian!) Nothing beats homemade, but I’ll get out and try Mozza- I had similar reservations, but you’ve convinced me to give them a shot. Oh, and great tip about going early, I often go to good places at “senior dining time,” to avoid waiting hours in a crush.
The two little family-owned Italian places I really loved have closed and now do catering only, but let me know if you ever need unbelievable Italian food catered and I’ll look up the numbers for you.

You can tell I’m a writer…I can’t shut up! (sorry)
Still, I have to say, incredible game yet again. You’re truly destined for greatness, and I look forward to following your career. You’re a fantastic role model for my son, and for that I thank you. (ie, no f-bombs on camera, even when you missed the cycle by thatmuch…which, btw, you ARE going to get one day)
You’re living proof that Good Guys can finish first. Your mama must be proud! I’d love to interview her and find out just what she did so right; I can only hope mine turns out so well!
    Take Care,
    Michele

Hey Andre. I have heard many good things about this place but have yet to find the time to eat there. Your blog makes me want to go there soon though! Congrats to you and your wife on the baby. They truly are something magnificent. The love you feel is overhelming and indescribable. Spend as much time as you can with them, and make sure you and your wife get as much sleep as possible. No one ever tells you about missed sleep!!
I have a suggestion for you. It’s sort of a ‘fast food’ place and it’s called The Hat. The Pastrami sandwhich is amazing! Not sure which location is closest to you, maybe the one by Cal State LA. Hope you get the chance to try it! Thank you for all you do in the community and good luck!

    Andre,
Dang, those mussels looked goood! Hey if you want to try some good pizza try Petrillo”s Pizza in San Gabriel. Trust me all the pizzas and food is AWSOME give it a try. Best of luck to you and your teamates the rest of the year GO DODGERS!

    Hi Andre,
Greetings from a long-time Dodgers fan living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa! I was raised and schooled in Southern California; moved away in 1975 but my heart is still there and the Dodgers are still my team. I love reading about the team on the website, watching the video clips, as well as seeing the good things the Dodgers are doing in the LA community. I sure miss it, especially in January when it’s below zero here! God’s blessings to you, your good wife, and your awaited bundle of joy.

    Andre ~
You have been a hot topic in my classroom over this past week. Two of my first graders discovered that the player they are seeing on tv hitting all these homeruns and the player that is posted in my classroom are the same one. The homerun you hit into the pool at Chase Field is still their favorite. I have to show it every single time we do highlights. Anyhow, I had to share this picture with you that these two students did for you. The original picture has them in it, but since your blog is a public forum, I had to crop it. Your name is Awesome Andre Ethier in the classroom, just so you know.

Hey Andre, I know you don’t check out many places in the Inland Empire, but if you ever feel like taking a drive check out Vince’s Spaghetti in Rancho Cucamonga 8241 Foothill Blvd. Order the Mostasagna with Meat Sauce, it will change your life!
Oh and if you feel like exploring your Mexican roots try Chema’s Tacos in Whittier, Ca 11527 Whittier Blvd. They have a simple menu, only tacos, but they are sooo good.

    ANDRE!!!!
You are an AMAZING player!!! i have never seen anything like what you have been able to to do. You have a tremendous amount of patience and I can safetly say that no other player would have been able to put up with what u have throughout this season as well as the last one. You are a potential all-star, i hope u know that! We are all behind you and support you in everything you do for the team and your fans.

For the past two years I have been telling people that you are a star in the making, and now everyone is seeing what you can do if you play all the time!! You are so humble about your success, and for that I have tremendous respect for you.

Finally, great review (I actually love to cook myself). It is amazing, you are a great hitter, great fielder, great player with an amzing attitude, and a tremendously giving person, as you volunteer and give back to your community. Congratulations on being a dad! I wish you, your wife, and your son the best of luck!!!

Hi Andre, my wife and I have been Dodger fans since they played in the colisium, you are are favorite player. We are big foodies, and I loved your blog, the only one of the restaurants you reviewed that we have been to is Mozza, and both the Pizzeria, and Osteria are fantastic. I am in the wine biz, and wondered if you liked wine? You don’t mention it in your blog. Have you tried Sea Smoke Botella Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara? It is the best Pinot in Calif. if you can’t find it, email me and I will get you some.
    Cheers, Jerry

    Hey Dre,
Ok, I wrote this before in your blog but you have to come try (if you haven’t already) the restaurant I work at. (Well, actually I work at the one in Arcadia but the one closest to you (assuming you live in Downtown LA) is in South Pasadena. It’s called Carmines. The BEST Italian I’ve had in So Cal. and I’m not just saying that cause I work there. Check it out: http://www.carminesrestaurantandbar.com
It’s on Fair Oaks just off the 110fwy in So Pas.
By the way, you’re on fire, man! Lovin it!
PS: Say hi to Manny for me. ;O)

Subject: Long-distance fan, the pennant race, a business opportunity?; and some of the best Mexican food!

I lived in LA (San Fernando Valley) for 40 years; until we moved about 12years ago; and we now live in the mountains of North Carolina; I now use MLB.com and XM to keep up with the pennant race: Go Boys in Blue!…..

    …I saw the note about Dre?s blog in the Wall Street Journal this weekend and thought I spied a business opportunity related to the negative impact that a typical baseball players schedule has on their eating habits ? and that if many all players face that as an issue; perhaps there?s an opportunity to fill a need; certainly the purchasing power is there?;

?Andre ? please visit Las Fuentes Mexican restaurant (on Vanowen in Reseda, in the Valley) ? there is none better (to us, anyway)?they?re a super success because it?s the real deal!; they started out about 20 years ago in a catering truck and have a huge local following ? do check it out!

Congrats on all of your success and the birth of your son. It’s great you were able to take family leave to experience the miracle.
The boys in blue have also had somewhat of a miracle. Earlier this year I was feeling down that the team couldn’t pass the D’backs, but now all cylinders are firing and we’ve got the momentum to take it all.
With a baby at home, your next review could be the best take out. All of us working parents are looking for great places to stop by and pick up a home style meal instead of the usual chain places.
Take out in front of the tv watching the Dodgers is Nirvana! Especially with a baby on your lap! Love and best wishes!

    Andre,
Since you are a foodie, I know in Arizona a lot of people are starting to add those wood burning pizza ovens in their backyards….MAKE YOUR OWN PIZZA! Once you perfect a recipe; pass it down to us.

The food looks soooo good! Your review makes me want to try out this pizza place. =) You should try FOGO DE CHAO in Beverly Hills. I think its in La Cienega Blvd. It’s one of the most exciting dining experiences I ever had. They have excellent food and excellent service!

Anyway, I wish you all Good Luck! I really hope you guys win the World Series!

Second, this review of Pizzeria Mozza is no exception! I am seriously thinking about checking out this place when I come down to LA for my birthday in a couple weeks…Keep ’em coming (both the food reviews & the wins, I want a Dodger World Series)!—Jamie H.

Hi Andre! First I want to say… I’m a new Dodger fan. I just started watching and coming to the games towards the end of the last season. So the team that is in place now, is the only team I know! And I think its a fantastic line up! You guys have such great energy together. Good luck in the NL Championship and the WS – I just know you’ll make it!

Oh, and I work right by Pizzeria Mozza but never tried it… now after hearing your review and seeing the food, I’m there! I hope I run into you…
    Go Blue!

    Hi Andre!

I’m a huge fan of the Dodgers and have been ever since I was little. Recently my husband and I were in the LA area attending the World Baseball Classic and decided to try Pizzeria Mozza. It was even better than we expected and we can’t wait to try some of your other suggestions.

How about more great Arizona suggestions?

  63. tanyajhong@gmail.com

    LOVE LOVE LOVE Pizzeria Mozza!

BUT!!!!……… If you want GREAT NYC-style pizza in LA…. Village Pizzeria on Larchmont! BEST Pepperoni thin-crust pizza!

It?s very rare that you find good eating places like these and the restaurants in Buckhead also provide some great receipies, and your site really help us to taste some great stuff!!
