Fry Bread House (in Phoenix)

My search was on. I can say that I have a sack of pennies worth of great Mexican food restaurants in Phoenix that I love, but it can become repetitive when switching dining spots and eating the same Mexican food (since I usually order the same thing wherever I go). Don’t get me wrong – I love it every time – but if you’re not aware, I am always in search of different twists on things.

In my short time of getting to know some of my favorite foods, people, and cultural influences, I have found that when you travel around this country as I do, you can find so many different versions of how Mexican food is made. For starters, I have a bias towards Mexican food in AZ and I couldn’t put my finger on why this was the case.

I had been hearing great things about this new Mexican restaurant in downtown Phoenix that had unbelievable red and green chile. Being an admirer of both, I had to try it. The place was all it was cracked up to be – great food, service and atmosphere. But (you didn’t think a but was coming did you?) it still was a sister of all the other regular Mexican food spots. I was in search of the cousin!

I walked away wondering what made this so similar besides the fact that it was Mexican food. Then it hit me. It’s a dessert that we all love and crave after we’re done eating good Mexican food…at least I do.  SOPAPIAS! Yes, this was it, the Native American influence of many of the Mexican food restaurants that I love so much here in Phoenix.

So I sat down one day at the computer and with a touch of a key here, a stroke over there, a little more fumbling with the keys and I pushed enter. A few random posts came up about a native American restaurant in downtown Phoenix called Fry Bread House. I’m there man!

It was one of my top priorties for a few days to make it into Phoenix to try this place. Some interuptions came up when I had planned visits, but it worked out that my little sis had a basketball game in North Phoenix and it just so happened that Fry Bread House was on the way to her contest. I rounded up the fam and headed out a little early to make sure we had time to stop and try the grub.

As we came closer to where Google maps had pointed to the location of the house, I realized that the name of the restaurant is accurate. It really is a house (note to reader: food served out of an old house is always great). Anyway, we walked in the front door and walked up to the counter. We were greeted by a lady manning the cash register and soda fountain. I scanned the menu and knew what I was here for.

We ordered and looked for a spot to sit. The dining area looked like the old living room of the house and about 10 or so picnic tables were scattered throughout. I patiently sat like a little kid waiting for my treats to arrive, but I already had one sitting in front of me – a red cream soda (my favorites of all favorites of any soda and this is one of the few places in town that serve it). Instant fifty extra bonus stars for this place. A few minutes had passed as I fell into a deep daydream of pleasure over my red soda. Then, my name was called.

First up was the hominy stew with beef, and if anyone knows Mexican food, they know that this is a staple in many dishes. It came with a clear broth with onions and “native seasonings,” they say, with big chunks of beef and fat hominy. Now that’s a soup. It might be my new favorite soup of all-time or at least a close second to menudo. This soup alone was worth the trip here, so who cares about the main food I ordered?

As I began to think that my taste buds couldn’t handle anymore pleasure, a grand smell of flour, water, and lard all FRIED refocused my attention and reminded me of what I was here for. The fry bread with red chile on it. As it sat in front of me, I couldn’t hold back and had to dig in.

The bread was so soft and gooey as I tore into it, it simply melted in my mouth. The red chile, no mistaking here, is done the right way. I would say now ‘forget the tortilla bring me the fry bread.’

As I left this place and began to drive off with an exhalting smile, I couldn’t help but come to terms with the feeling that this might have been my best meal of the last year. It was exciting to realize this, but sobering at the same time to wonder if I had been wasting my time eating at some of my other favorite spots since I have been home.

Well, at least now I know where to go when I’m craving  (in my opinion) the best meal I have had in a while. In fact, it was so good, I forgot to take pictures so I’m going back again soon and will add them. Until then…

    Andre,

Ahh you make me want to try this place! Haha hopefully I’ll go for spring training but if not, I’m definitely going on April 10! And hopefully I can convince my parents to take me!

Thanks for the blog and I hope to see many more to come!

I hope you and your family are doing well!

Wow, that was probably your longest blog…..love it…no complains. I’m glad to hear from you and can’t wait to see you back in the field wearing blue. The soup you are talking about sounds like “Posole” and if that is the case……OMG it is delicious. MMMMM with some tostadas….. Once again I read it before eating….why do I keep doing this. I’m still trying to figure the Fried things you are talking about, so I guess I will have to all the way to Phoenix and check it.

This place sounds fantastic. To tell you the truth, I have never eaten any of the dishes you mentioned. However, just reading your description of the food made my mouth water. Thanks for the new review. My best to your family.

    Andre ~
Oh my goodness!! I don’t know what to say that I haven’t said so many times about your reviews. Now, I want you playing in the MLB for a very, very long time, but I think you definitely have a second calling doing these restaurant reviews. You are absolutely terrific at it!!! I am picturing a Food Channel or Travel Channel show someday in the future. You make people want to try foods they probably would never try any other time. Your description is phenomenal and your sense of humor just hilarious.

However, for now, I will be happy with the mlblogs reviews and you playing in the outfield and hitting homeruns for the Dodgers. We can’t wait to see our young core just light it up this year. I am hoping to go to Spring Training, and if I do, I will certainly try one of the places you recommend.

We have been impatiently waiting for Spring Training to begin. My class has been counting down to Spring Training, and then once Spring Training starts, we begin a countdown until Opening Day. Like I have said before, you are an everyday topic in my classroom of first graders, along with some of the other Dodgers now. We are even studying Jackie Robinson and what he did for not only the Dodgers, but for baseball.

I wish you all the best as you enter into salary negotiations with the Dodgers. All your fans are behind you and hope you get what you so very much deserve. Best wishes always to you and your family.

Great to hear from you ‘Dre,
I’m that little old gray headed man in an LA cap and Dodger shirt you met outside Shea Stadium last summer, which you most likely forgot.
If I ever get to Arizona I’ll try out the Fry Bread House.
    Good luck with the arbitration.

Great review again! And I read it BEFORE I have lunch; now I’m REALLY hungry!!! πŸ™‚ You must know by now Andre that you have a way with words and writing down your thoughts!!! Can’t wait to try it!!! Hopefully I’ll be able to make it to ST to try your places; only time will tell if I’m able to.

Andre!! You have convinced me. When I go to Spring Training in March I am going to Fry Bread House and Ninos Mexican Restaurant. I even mapquested the locations from where I am staying. Maybe I will run into you and the other guys there! Please keep writing more reviews so I can get more ideas. I am staying in Quality Inn in Glendale so include some eating places close by. I am so looking forward to seeing the Dodgers play again. I know that the team will again be awesome no matter who is playing (that is, as long as you are one of those inlcuded) Postseason was wonderful and exciting. I know it will happen again this year!! GO DODGERS! Love Cat

  11. heartruss

Andre…I almost forgot. My friend brought a letter to work that her husband had received. It was from you and the Rescue Mission. It was a personal letter of thanks for the donation that was made. You are truly a wonderful caring person besides being a super baseball player. It gave me goosebumps when I read that letter.

  12. 16ethierkershaw22

Andre, a friend of mine was talking to me about how she thought i’d be awesome if you were to do a live chat type of thing with us fans, I totally agree with her! Although I know you might now want to do it in the offseason, I understand. But we would really appreciate it if you took time to do it during the season or something. I know you’ve had a chat before but not a live one. So i’m just throwing that idea out there and maybe you can get the word across to who ever is in charge of setting up those chats you guys have had in the past. If not you, maybe other players will do it, preferably you though!

    Take care,
    Erika

    Hey Andre,

So this has nothing to do with this blog but I have a couple things to tell you.

First, how about updating your about me! Haha it says you’re expecting your first son later this year! :] We all know why you were missing for those few games. Lol

I hope you are at the Dodgers Caravan this year. And thank you for doing so much for the LA Community. I see your pictures on Dodgers.com and it seriously makes me so happy.

Thank you for being so sweet at Under the Lights. It only made me think of you as an even BETTER person than I thought.

Next, I agree with Erika. You should do a live chat! I think it would be an awesome experience for your fans to talk to you and have you answer some of our questions we have for you.

But for now, I hope you and your family are doing well and thank you for keeping in touch with us Dodger/Ethier Fans

  14. chris@dodgerfan.net

    Hey Andre,

Dude, the Fry Bread House sounds amazing! Being a fan of hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants, this definitely sounds like one that is worth experiencing – it’s on the list for Spring Training.

Here’s one for you when you’re back in LA: Gilbert’s El Indo. http://www.yelp.com/biz/gilberts-el-indio-restaurant-santa-monica. It’s a total local’s place, cash only and fantastic, authentic food. Make sure you meet Fernando when you get there…he’s the owner (and chief bartender). Rumor has it that the locals don’t review it because they don’t want it to be over-run by more people. Check it out!

Finally, check out my Dodgers blog: http://www.dodgerfan.net. We’re huge Andre Ethier fans, and look forward to seeing you in Spring Training. Would love to hear what you think of the blog, so drop us a line if you get a chance!

Thanks again for continuing to write Dining with ‘Dre, and enjoy the last three weeks off before Spring Training begins!

    Hey there Andre,

I know you said “carbs are out” on the Pizzeria review, but I say anytime a meal has a nice piece of bread, you just have to be a little happy! ;0) Need I say more?

Good luck as you all start spring training. Our entire family is looking to the smell of fresh cut grass and nice white uniforms, and a clean slate as the new season begins!

    Go get ’em!

  18. lpastorbasso@aol.com

    Andre,

First, let me say that I am pulling for you in your arbitration hearing with the Dodgers. You deserve every penny you are asking for, and now that you are a family man, you’re going to need it! Regarding the Fry Bread House Restaurant, it sounds like a New Mexican style eatery. The Sopapillas, and the Posole are definitely New Mexican. I wonder if the green and red chiles are also from New Mexico. The New Mexico chile is definitely distinctive, and I think are the best chiles anywhere. I cook with New Mexico chile all the time, and it makes all the difference in the world to any recipe. If you ever make it to Albuquerque, you will find a bunch of great eateries that cook in the same style as the Fry Bread House. My favorite is Las Quatas. I am really hoping to take a trip to Phoenix this Spring, and I look forward to trying some of your recommended Mexican eateries. Keep up the blogging; you’re really good at it, and it shows a great side of you. Just one more reason to root, root, root for the Dodgers, and Andre Ethier!

  19. sparkleplenty_1

Hey Andre! Don’t know if you ever get down to South Orange County (yeah, I know, it’s Angel territory πŸ™‚ ), but one of the best, truly authentic hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants is in San Juan Capistrano. It’s El Molino de Oro, and they have the BEST posole I’ve ever laid a lip on. Consider comin’ on down – believe me you’ll love it. BTW, you and the team have LOTS of fans down here, too. Can’t wait for ST!!

    Andre~
I have been so busy over at ITD(along with many more) ranting over your upcoming arbitration hearing (that shouldn’t and hopefully still won’t happen because you deserve every penny) that I forgot about yours and Maggie’s anniversary on Monday. So, here is to a belated HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, and I hope you enjoyed your off-season with your family. I am looking forward to seeing you and all the Dodgers take the field real soon. I am not sure I will get to go to any spring training games due to my teaching job, but we are coming to see you play during your home opening series against the Giants. It won’t be hard to spot me. I will be surrounded by orange and black, seeing how my family consists of me, the lone Dodger fan, and the rest, Giants fans. Enjoy your last week of freedom before going to Spring Training. However, I guess living in Glendale makes it a little easier for you.

    Hey Andre!!!
Sorry I’m kinda late in chiming in on this, but I am SO glad that you got the raise you most certainly deserve!!! I know you would’ve gotten a raise either way, but this way it’s a better raise than what was being offered to you initially. But most of all, I’m thrilled that the hearing was avoided.

I am still holding out hope that I’ll be able to make it to AZ this year! If we do, it’ll be for a few days from March 9 thru the 12th. We’ll just see.

    Dre’ babY!

Trust me, I will be your number one fan even when the Dodgers sign Manny! I know with all the hype, people seem to forget about the TRUE Dodgers player! Like you! Who have been there since 2006!

I hope with Manny on the team, he will bring a better atmosphere to the team and you guys will go all the way!

    I love my ‘Dre!

  47. colliethec

Hey Dre… Here are some symbolic places to eat…
    .
What about the Rawhide? They serve BBQ rattlesnake! That would be a great way to start the year off… Eatin them snakes!
    .
Then you can go to the Sugar Bowl and have a Rocky Road sunday in honor of that team from Colorado… the Rockies.
    .
Then hit up Padre’s Modern Mexican Cuisine. Obviously for the San Diego Padres.
    .
Then go to Mesa and have some Giant hamburgers.
    .
That should be enough to get you ready for the season. Well that and all your hard work!!!
    .
Congrats on the raise and we are so glad you got it. We love watching you play. It really takes the mind off the things of this world that are a bummer right now. You have a great attitude as well and that is a huge example to many out there, me included!
    .
Take care of the foot and have a great time working out in the sun!
    .
    Go Blue!!
    .
    Bring the Ring in 2009!!!

  48. nellyjune

    Andre ~
We are so glad you are back out there playing, and it looks by that triple you had on Tuesday, your foot must be feeling a whole lot better. That 2-run homerun was looking pretty good as well, and I have always been a fan of how you approach the plate so even your walks are pretty impressive because of the patience you have at each at-bat. You really make the pitcher work, whether it results in a hit, walk or even an out.

On another note, one of my students had written a song for you back in September/October that was posted on here several times, and it was entered into a school writing festival. Well, it won first place in its category and is now headed to the county level for another judging. I have really gotten my class to follow this Dodger team and with you being their favorite (no influence by their teacher of course), it’s been one crazy year. We have at least 100 letters ready to go out once your regular season is underway.

Take Care and have fun during Spring Training!!!

Hey ‘Dre! I know you were supposed to receive an award for Athletes Against Autism and I just wanted to say congrats even though I haven’t heard or seen any pictures from your actual acceptance. But congrats!

And just wanted to make sure you doing good and that you are healthy and having fun with Spring Training!

    Hope to see you soon!

Andre, thanks for the positive endorsement you gave to the Fry bread House. Word of mouth and star appeal have kept my mom (owner and operator) and her business alive and kicking for more than 16 years!! It’s always been a dream for my mom to open up her own business and being full-blooded papago from southern Arizona, naturally, cooking is her favorite forte. Tell everybody at spring training to stop by for “tasty” fry bread and hominy stew! The only “authentic” native american food in Arizona!!

    Andre~
I just wanted to let you know that my first graders cheer you and the Dodgers on everyday that you have been playing since spring training began. Once they finish their math assignment, we turn on the game about 1:30 (usually you have batted once already) and they are able to watch while enjoying their free choice activity time. Some are choosing this time to watch the baseball game instead of playing with puzzles, toys and such, and it’s great!!! They are asking all kinds of questions about the rules and how the game is played. We have been doing so much geography in the class related to the mlb teams that they know where the other teams are from (city and state). It’s just fun having a class really, really into baseball this season, and to be so into the Dodgers that they are calling anything blue, Dodger Blue and eating only Dodger Blue M&Ms.

    Have a wonderful week!!!

  57. nellyjune

Well, that was a nice surprise to find out you are doing Carne Asada Sundays. We will definitley have to make a trip on one of those days.

Keep up the hard work Andre. Your fans think you are fabulous!! I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s only spring training and your hits will come, preferably during the regular season. I got my new 2009 issue of the Dodgers Magazine, and I loved the article where they asked you all the questions about Arizona. Great job as always!!! I was hoping for a Sun Devil win today to keep the Pac 10 going strong in the NCAA tourney, but the women’s team made it to the Sweet 16, which is great as well.

Take Care, and remember, your fans think you are awesome, both on and off the field.

    Hey ‘Dre
I’ve been reading that you’re not feeling assured of your position as the team’s starting right fielder. Listen you got a right to go into a slump just like anybody else. Believe me the more Torre get’s to know you, the more you can take your position for granted.
Sorry to tell you, you are no longer competing with Juan Pierre.
But if you feel that you have to worry about it and that’s your nature, go right on and do it.

  59. rockiesfan

    Andre,
I just got back from this place about fifteen minutes ago. It was absolutely delicious!! The lady that was taking our orders said that there had been a sudden increase of people from all over the U.S. the past couple months, even after factoring in Spring Training. I wonder if you helped that? Thank you for the tip, and if you’ve got any ideas for good restraunts in Denver, I’d love to hear them! I took some pics, too, if you’d like to use them for your blog.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDRE!!!!!!!! I hope you have a fantastic birthday. It must be kind of nice eventhough it’s considered a road game for the Dodgers, you get to celebrate your birthday with your family in Arizona. How cool is that!?!

As far as baseball, you have had a great start to the season. I haven’t checked stats yet (too early), but your OBP has to be pretty good right now with all that walking you have been doing these last couple of days. Keep up the great work, both on and off the field. You are doing a fabulous job!!! My class is cheering for you and the Dodgers every step of the way. Like I have said, you are their favorite Dodger, and, of course, has nothing to do with their teacher. I will tell you one thing. They all can spell your first and last name (not easy for a first grader), and they can all tell me where Phoenix, Arizona is on the map. My students all did birthday cards for you. They will be mailed out this weekend. Seeing how you are not in Los Angeles until Monday anyway, it should work out.

    Once again,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDRE!!!!! BEST WISHES ALWAYS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!

Andre, I cannot even put it in words how bad I felt yesterday. All I asked for was a picture and you said ” I don’t do pictures”, Which is a complete lie because I have 2 with you. It really wasn’t the fact that you didn’t take it with me but because it made you look so bad in front of a bunch of fans. I hate that those fans had to take that image of you with them because I know that is so far from the person that you really are. Maybe you were having a bad day and I understand, you are human. I just really needed to let that out because it has been bothering me. Just know that one experience isn’t going to make me change the way I think about you but I can’t say the same about a lot of other fans. Ill wrap this up by congratulating you on your 2 hrs yesterday!!

    -Erika.

  81. nellyjune

I am not sure what happened. I wasn’t there, but I think you need to give Andre the benefit of the doubt here. I have been a fan of his since he was with Oakland, and I have yet to take a picture with him other than “Under the Lights”, and all the fans there got the same picture. IMO opinion he seems very private, and maybe, just maybe, somebody in the midst of the day yesterday crossed the line. If you even thought he had a bad day, then maybe you should have just left it at that and not posted at all.

  82. 16ethierkershaw22

Nelly, I too have been a fan of Andre’s since he was with Oakland. I understand what you are saying but I was just so shocked with Andre because that times that ive met him he has been super nice, so I was really thrown off by his attitude yesterday. I am still as big an Ethier fan as ever that is why I am concerned, I really don’t want people going around and bashing my favorite player over some stupid picture taking. I dont know if you can understand where I am coming from but I really didn’t mean it in a bad way.

  83. dodgers16ethier

Same here. I KNOW for a fact that Ethier is a GREAT person and I just want to be able to explain to all these people how truly awesome he is. But it’s kind of hard when they are all upset at his actions that he took yesterday. I have two pictures with him so it really didn’t bother me that I didn’t get another one. What bothered me more was that he didn’t take pictures with everyone else and if they don’t know what kind of person he is, they take this day with them and see him as I guess you can say an arrogant person. But I know that is definitely not who Andre is. I want to know his intentions behind this and I know that it’s a good reason. I just want to let everyone else know. And nobody crossed the line because I saw him when he first came out and he came to my section first and he took pictures with no one. He did stay and talk to a few people though. I will never give up on ‘Dre because he has done so many wonderful things for the Dodgers organization and he is an awesome player. I can’t wait for May 3rd. Hopefully, he’ll have a change of heart and take pictures then. Even if he doesn’t, I will always support him 100%!

  84. nellyjune

Maybe Andre didnt take pictures that day because he was annoyed by such an obsessed n stalker-ish fan… I mean we all love Andre but some people go over the top all the commenting on his personal life and every little aspect about him….

just stating my opinion from reading some of these comments… no harm intended.

  97. Dodger4life

Way to go Andre and all the Boy’s in Blue!!!
    .
O-Dog on the cycle, Kemp streaking through the first 14, Manny with the long ball and the fear instilled into the opposing pitchers, Blake raking on the back end, Billz and Kershaw with the solid performances, Furcal setting the tone and plugging up the middle with Orlando. Belisario Stultz and Wolf, Wade and Brox, I have’nt forgotten #42 with the big RBI, the Captain J. Martin keeping everything in check. Andre with player of the week and man your ripping the ball. This is alot of good timing fun. Keep up the good work and Roll On Rollercoaster…. Roll On!!!

  98. 16ethierkershaw22

I literally laughed at your post. I’m assuming that you werent even there, so you really have no say in this. Excuse me for coming here and congratulating Andre when he does good in a game or wins an award. If it bothers you that much, then stop reading the comments on this blog. Next time you want might want to show up to the party a little earlier, since that is like a week-old argument.

  99. mlbbaby@hotmail.com

i’m sorry i don’t check his page every hour of every day and stalk him. yes i came on here right now because i was reading itd and i thought i’d take a look to see if someone responded and sure enough.. anyways, yes it is encouraging for the players to hear from fans when they play a good game or win an award… just saying some people go overboard with it though… and that might be a little annoying… maybe thats why sometimes players/celebs act the way they do and ignore fans…

…. Oh and yes I was at photo day, that’s all I’m going to say.

  100. nellyjune

You were awesome at AT&T Park tonight!!!!!! Thanks for bringing home the winning run. BTW – you are now tied with Pujols in the NL with 5 IBB. I really enjoyed the debut of your “dining with ‘Dre” at Ninos! Its hard to believe that I haven’t been to a game yet this season (been pretty busy) but I have been watching every game from home! and I can’t wait to go to a game! I really hope I get to see you in person again this year (I got your autograph at the AT&T store last year) I really appreciate the time you take to do stuff for your fans! keep up the good work!! and I can’t wait for your next review!!

    Andre:

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck on the upcoming road trip. I have a feeling that it is going to be a huge success for you and the Dodgers. You’re an integral part of the reason the team has gotten off to such a great start and I have no doubt you will continue to have a big impact for the rest of the season and many years to come. Hoping to see you in the starting lineup in the All Star Game. Just play your game your way and have fun doing it and the rest will take care of itself.

  103. cpompe1

    Hey Andre!
It’s been a LONG time since I last posted; sorry for the delay. I just wanted to encourage you and the rest of the team that even though things may not look the way you and your mates would like right now, I am quite confident that things will pick up, and soon. Remember that you have a wife and a son that love you. I’m not going to try to tell you how you should try to get out of your slump; you’re surrounded by baseball professionals that can and will help you. Just know that you have many fans that know that will always have your back. Good luck on the road trip.

What an awesome couple of games you have had Andre, and your fans couldn’t be happier for you. You prove time and time again why we love to watch you play. Even through the tough times, it’s those tough times that make games like today’s and yesterday’s so much sweeter when we know how hard you work for every moment you are on the field. I don’t know if you are aware of this, but those of us over at ITD were told that you have had 6 walk-off hits in two years and no player has ever done that in the major leagues.

    ‘Dre!
Ive been meaning to leave you a comment for a while but this website always takes a long time to log me in…. I just wanted to congratulate you on you back 2 back walkoffs! πŸ™‚
Andre “Walk-Off” Ethier should your name, seriously, you already have six. Iv’e been there for 2 of them! Its such a great feeling to experience a walk-off hit in person but its extra special when your favorite player does it. I was at the signing on the 5th, man about almost all the girls where sporting their Ethier gear because they were there to see you. It was funny when we were screaming “We love you Andre!” and then some guy yelled “I love you too Kershaw!” ha, ha. See ya Wed!

Hi Andre! It’s so cool that you’re into dining out and food in general. Some people don’t understand what we foodies are on about! Great blog, it’s interesting to see what you have to say about L.A. restaurants. Keep up the blogging. I will be catching the games either at Chavez Ravine or at home on tv!

I also have a food blog (but it’s vegetarian, don’t know if that’s your thing!): http://theveganmouse.blogspot.com

    Take care,

I’ll listen to anything you say.

    Go Dodgers!

  122. nellyjune

Andre Ethier – All I have to say is you rocked in tonight’s game. The first one was plenty, but the other two were just icing on the cake. I will enjoy all the highlights featuring you tonight, but then it’s off to Dodger Stadium in the morning for the ITD tour and then the game. I hope you have some more of those home runs in you for tomorrow night. Take Care and best wishes always to you and your family.

Also – Very well done on your Best Buy “A Better L.A. Kid” Day – It is just awesome all the things you do for both the community in Los Angeles and in Phoenix.

I hate I missed this while I was in Phoenix a few weeks back. My wife and I would have loved this place. We did try La Braza and it was great. If you haven’t been there you need to go there and try the 16 meat dinner. It was filling and you need to make sure to try the chicken heart. We heard about it and made sure on our vacation from NC that we would get them and you would be surprised. I would have to give them a 10/10. They even stayed open late for us.

Have a good one and keep up those hits to right field LEFTY!!

  127. dilope08@yahoo.com

Andre – OMG SOPAPILLAS are the best actually first time i had them in EL Paso Texas. I really miss them especially the cinnamon ones with lots of honey!!! Actually nobody here in LA knows what those are!! Maybe you should open a restaurant here and serve them to your fans!!

Hey Andre, thanks for this restaurant. I went to phoenix on friday August 14 to catch the game. I reside in Rowland Heights California. Before my family and I went to Phoenix I made sure I checked out your blog. We tried the fried bread house and it was delicious. We ordered the hominy stew, the ultimate taco (huge), burrito with red chilie, and red chili stew. It was all delicious. Great place. We finished with the fried bread with chocolate and butter, man it was worth it. Great place to eat!!!!!

  131. raquelfhair@yahoo.com

Hi Andre! These reviews are GREAT! I love that you are throwing some Phoenix eats into the mix! Its been a while since your last review, maybe I can help you out on a hot spot! Next time your in Phoenix you have got to check out The Parlor Pizzeria! Its a 1960’s beauty parlor ( the old Salon de Venus on 19th st and Camelback) turned modern pizza parlor! And a little fact the owners parents own Nellos Ahwatukee, Im sure you’ve been there maybe once or twice! Check it out, the food and history is amazing!!!

I heard about atleast 3 different ones that you were supposedly going to post but it never happened, it’s okay though, I bet it’s because you’re busy being such an awesome player! What a season you’re having, honeslty, it doesn’t surprise me because I always knew you’d turn out to be one of the best. I also love all the recognition you are receiving, you were recently a trending topic on Twitter! Haha, that may not be a big deal to you but I certainly got a good kick outta that. Mmmm… Menudo! I just Moved to Jersey from So Cal. There’s no such thing as good mexican food over here! I miss all my favorite authentic mexican restaurants, so, I’m over here looking for decent “spanish” food. So far… Nothin’…

  136. dodgerbluetruefan36

Hopefully you remember this name and read this. Man I can’t belive you left me and my kid hanging on picture day. I am sure you remember because you even said you dont take picture with anyone. ” If you want a pic just take one of me”. Bro, I been around the game a long time. Played in Mexico with the Cerveseros, even though I was in the minors, kids look up to us. Never treat your fans this way. My three year old holds your jersey man, and cheers you on. Dam bro, she is young to understand the game but oneday as she gets older, I will let her know that the youngster from Arizona is a real jerk.. My bad bro, don’t want to sound harsh bro. But to be honest with you even MLB ball players would agree.
    Good luck! in your career.

  137. dodgerbluetruefan36

Thanks for taking a pic with me and my family a three year old who wears your jersey.. Yea right, what was your comment, “dont take picture with anyone, take one of me”. LOL.. I am not the only one who thinks you’re a jerk.. Talk to some of your fellow team mates. Who am i Martin36 Minor league player for the Cerveseros in Mexico.. A country where we came from.. And you treat your fans this way.. LOL.. Grow up.. Man, You forget where your roots are from..

I just discovered this blog of yours at the beginning of this baseball season, and it has been so much fun to go through and read! You have an awesome sense of humor and your descriptions are flawless. You have a way with words; I can so easily imagine everything you talk about.

And I really hope that you do continue this blog. I’ll definitely look forward to reading it if you do. πŸ™‚

Hi Andre! I know you have not blogged lately, but of course I know you are busy with training & all the charity work you do.
I wanted to Thank you for blogging about Fry Bread house. I went to a Dodger Spring Training game on March 5, 2010, & BTW you looked great out there. We were hungry after the game so I remembered The Fry Bread house. I did a search on my phone and it lead me directly there. You were right it did look like an actual house :-). My husband ordered the Fry Bread with green chili & of course I ordered the red chili since it was the one you had :-). My husband shared his with me and let me tell you that I actually liked that one a lot more. What I liked the most was the Beef and hominy soup. It was soooo good! I craved it all weekend so we decided to stop by Fry Bread house on Sunday before we headed back out to Cali. So we woke up excited and got ready to go have some more soup, & guess what? They are closed on Sundays :-(. I went home with the desire too have that soup…Lucky for my husband and myself that I am a great cook and can figure almost any recipe out. I made the soup and it was really, really good! So if you ever want that soup when you are in LA you can come over…LOL :-). Thanks for your food reviews Andre! Hopefully you can add more soon.

thanks for the blog but i have a suggestion you should start blogging recipes, i mean you would have to tell and family secrets( only if your down).

  143. martastevens@yahoo.com

Indian Fry Bread restaurant is the best.. Speaking Mexican food, have you ever eaten at Carolina’s Mexican Restaurant at 14th Street & Mohave in downtown Phoenix. They have the best machaca in town.

GO DODGERS.. YOU GUYS ROCK !

  144. saucedosol@yahoo.com

Hey Andre, If you’re interested in looking for great hot spots for dinning out. Watch “The best thing i ever ate” I make an adventure when i go out to a dodger game to eat before and after at any “hidden” restaurant around Los Angeles. Try Angelini Osteria and go there for the Lasagna Verde. Its ABSOLUTELY out of this world. Keep the blogging up and the homers!!!

    Big Fan
    Sol

You are so right! I think that Indian Fry Bread may be the real thing that is attracting so many teams to spring train in Arizona! (nevermind the weather or the sweet aprilaire !)

    GO DODGERS!!!

I wish you all the best as you enter into salary negotiations with the Dodgers. All your fans are behind you and hope you get what you so very much deserve. free movie
